What are the situations of grave exhumation?

Exhuming a body from its original location is sometimes necessary in order to properly identify it. When the concession for the funerary niche expires and is not renewed or when there is an investigation, exhumations will take place.

Situations where it's necessary to exhume a body.

The following are the most typical scenarios in which a body is typically exhumed:

Removal of the body from a cemetery in order to make room for the burial of additional dead in the same location.

The movement of the body in preparation for cremation, re-interment in a different location within the same cemetery, or both. This is typically done in situations where the goal is to reunite couples who have passed away on different dates, parents with their kids, etc.

Special exhumation cases

It is possible to exhume a body under extraordinary circumstances, however, these are uncommon:

Premature exhumations occur when the minimal legal waiting period has not been met. Special permission will be needed.

When a death occurs under questionable circumstances, a judge needs to gather evidence in order to proceed with the case.

To conduct research for scientific purposes with the relatives' permission.
